MTV TRL Christmas
(Lava/Atlantic, 2001)
Anyone worried about the perilous state of the American economy will have their wallets warmed by two songs on TRL Christmas. Willa Ford's "Santa Baby (Gimme Gimme Gimme)" and the Simple Plan's "My Christmas List" are a pair of demanding brats going supernova in Toys R Us. Big gurl Willa squeals for "a loft with a deck overlooking Central Park." The Plan prefer "a DVD/a big screen TV." What they really want from Santa is to be Christina Aguilera and Blink-182 respectively. If there's any justice, he'll saddle them with this collection of teen dross. Sugar Ray's lame take on "Little Saint Nick" makes the Beach Boys sound like Deicide. If only they had the wit of Smash Mouth, who smartly deliver "Better Do It Right" like it was the Grinch's gleeful theme.
