Yolanda Adams
Christmas With Yolanda
Elektra
Adams is a leading light of pop-friendly contemporary gospel music. And if that rubric suggests that her singing style is inoffensive, even anodyne, then so be it. Adams is no Mahalia Jackson. Relative to Adams, Vanessa Williams' stylings are like that of a blowtorch. But it's the holidays, and the likes of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "O Holy Night" achieve a certain coziness through the lite-jazz settings of Christmas With Yolanda. And, hey, if you think the melisma-mangling that Christina Aguilera perpetrates on My Kind of Christmas could hurt Granny's ears, then Adams will go down as easy as plum pudding.
