Rap maestro Master P knows how to make an exit. When his new album, Da Last Don, hits stores on June 2, it will be a two-CD set loaded with artists from P's No Limit label. The album will also be, P says, his last. Before he
In fact, of the album's 26 songs (and three "interludes"), Master P only appears solo on the songs "Da Last Don," "Ride," "Let My 9 Get 'Em" and "More 2 Life." "The beat is just so hypnotic that you can't help but nod your head," said Fiend (a.k.a. Richard Jones) of his work with Master P on the song "These Streets Keep Me Rolling." Fiend's enthusiasm for the project is all the more remarkable considering that his own No Limit album, There's One In Every Family, debuted at #8 on this week's Billboard 200 albums chart. Master P (a.k.a. Percy Miller) entered the rap game in the mid-'90s after successfully turning his California record store into an indie label called No Limit Records. During his career, he released four full-length albums and two soundtracks, including his own material. His first release, 1994's The Ghetto's Tryin' To Kill Me, kicked off a never-ending series of releases from his artists, with each release advertising No Limit merchandise and upcoming releases from other artists on the label. His 1997 film "I'm 'Bout It," a drama/comedy based on his life following the shooting death of his brother, was a direct-to-video smash, a fact that ensured that his second film, "I Got the Hook-Up!," will open up in theaters on May 27. Late last year, Master P announced that he would retire from the rap game to concentrate on running his business and that Da Last Don would be his final album. "Me and P just made a vibe, with the lyrics and everything, that is really hypnotic," said Fiend, who also appears on the songs "Black and White," "War Wounds" and "Make 'Em Say Uhhh #2." For No Limit R&B group Sons of Funk, who previously appeared on Master P's "I Miss My Homies" (RealAudio excerpt), they view the Da Last Don songs they worked on ("The Ghetto's Got Me Trapped" and "Goodbye to My Homies") as one of their last chances to record with someone that group member Rico (a.k.a. Rico Crowder, 23) calls "a genius." "It was just Master P and myself in the studio," Rico said of "Goodbye To My Homies," "and we kept hearing music. I just kept hearing what he was saying and sang the hook while he did the rap. That guy doesn't play around. If he hears it in his head, that's exactly how he wants it."
