There is a large base
of scientific evidence that shows early involvement with active music participation
leads to increased
spatial reasoning
skills, improved reading, and higher math and verbal scores on
standardized tests. There is no doubt about it: music education
equals brainpower. The VH1 Save The Music Foundation regards music
as a fundamental part of a child’s education, and is committed
to restoring music education to America’s public schools.
To ensure that schools are prepared and empowered to launch a successful and
enduring instrumental music program, only schools that meet certain criteria
will be considered. Please note that as a non-profit organization, our resources
are limited. Therefore, a school that does not meet all of the following criteria
will not receive a grant of instruments:
- The school will provide for at least one instrumental music
teacher's salary in its budget for a new program, based on the
receipt of instruments from VH1 Save The Music
- The school is prepared to implement an instrumental music instruction
curriculum and provide a qualified instructor to implement it
- The school does not currently have instrumental music and will
add instrumental music to the regular school curriculum, offering
no less than weekly in-school music classes. (General music and
recorder can be currently available at the school).
- The school has adequate, secure storage space for instruments
and equipment
- The school will respond to any surveys of students' progress
requested by the VH1 Save The Music Foundation and will allow
representatives from the VH1 Save The Music Foundation to visit
once a year
- The school will accept full responsibility for the normal maintenance
of the donated instruments, with the exception of that which
is covered through manufacturers warrantees. This includes providing
the necessary supplies for the instruments to function, such
as, strings and reeds.
Because the majority of extra-musical benefits are gained from early
involvement with music education, new instruments will be purchased
for beginning music programs at the elementary or middle school
level only. Please review the questions on the following pages
and answer as clearly, thoroughly, and specifically as possible. All
questions must be answered in full in order to be considered — any
vague responses or omissions will result in your school being eliminated
from the review process. Please include a letter written on school
stationery by the school principal in support of the application.
Note: VH1 Save The Music reserves the right to redistribute awarded instruments
if a VH1 Save The Music recipient school ceases to utilize the donated instruments,
or if the school's status per the above criteria changes.
