HOULIHAN’S HELPS THE VH1 SAVE THE MUSIC FOUNDATION AND COMCAST DONATE $90,000 WORTH OF NEW MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS TO THE WILKINSBURG PUBLIC SCHOOLS
Wilkinsburg, PA, October 6, 2008 – The VH1 Save The Music Foundation, with the help of Houlihan’s Restaurants Inc. and Comcast, will present $90,000 worth of new musical instruments to restore instrumental music education programs at three Wilkinsburg Public Schools for the 2008/2009 school year. The donation is part of The Foundation’s efforts to restore 3 million dollars worth of instrumental music programs nationwide this year. To mark the donation an event will be held at Kelly Elementary School where students will open the boxes for the first time and share a demonstration lesson with their parents at 10 a.m. on October 10th, 2008.
Kelly Elementary, Johnston Elementary and Turner Elementary bands will all receive instruments through the donation.
In tune with its tradition of originality and appreciation for independent music, Houlihan’s, a popular, stylish casual dining restaurant with locations nationwide, formed an ongoing fundraising partnership with the VH1 Save The Music Foundation in Spring 2008 to support instrumental music education programs in public schools throughout the country.
From organizing local high school band concerts and more, Houlihan’s Restaurants galvanized their local communities to collect donations for VH1 Save The Music and raise awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s education. In addition, Houlihan’s corporate stores donated proceeds from sales of the restaurants’ signature ‘mini dessert’ menu to The Foundation.
“Houlihan’s is committed to ensuring that students in Wilkinsburg receive the benefits of music education,” said Jen Gulvik, Vice President of Marketing for Houlihan’s. “We look forward to working with VH1 Save The Music for years to come to restore music programs throughout the country. Music is a huge part of our brand identity, and we are passionate about helping the VH1 Save The Music Foundation ensure that Wilkinsburg public school students don’t miss out on the limitless benefits of playing a musical instrument. Studies have shown that playing an instrument helps children develop critical thinking skills, and students who are involved in music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college. ”
“Having just celebrated The Foundation’s 10th anniversary we are happy to continue our mission by partnering with Houlihan’s Restaurants, Inc.,” said Paul Cothran, Executive Director, VH1 Save The Music Foundation. “Their ongoing support helps us to ensure that all students throughout the Wilkinsburg school district receive the benefits of music and continues to raise public awareness about the need for music education programs.”
“We are proud to work with Houlihan’s and the VH1 Save The Music Foundation to ensure that music education will be a part of the lives of Wilkinsburg students for years to come,” said Linda Hossinger, Senior Vice President of Comcast's Three Rivers Region.
