Welcome to VH1 Music Studio,

After 20 years, the HIV/AIDS epidemic has entered into its third decade affecting people around the world, and is on track to becoming one of the worst epidemics in recorded history. In 2003, VH1 embarked on its first-ever campaign dedicated to HIV/AIDS awareness using the reach and power of programming to communicate the issues surrounding the disease. In an effort to educate viewers about the waning concern about the disease in the United States, VH1 NEWS PRESENTS: AIDS - A Pop Culture History is a unique and invaluable look back through the history of AIDS as seen though the prism of popular culture.

Hosted by AIDS activist Ashley Judd, the documentary reviews how media and culture greatly influenced the general public’s knowledge and attitudes about the disease over the last 20 years. Revealing some of the most moving images from the 80’s and 90’s, the program chronicles the journey of HIV/AIDS awareness through five stages: silence, fear, activism, mainstream and complacency. In addition, the news special depicts how complex issues surrounding the virus affected individual behaviors and perceptions, as well as contributed to the public’s commitment to HIV/AIDS.

VH1 NEWS PRESENTS: AIDS - A Pop Culture History premiered in recognition of World AIDS Day on Monday, December 1, and was aired in conjunction with public service announcements and an online campaign that provided resources about treatment and prevention. Receiving critical recognition from various media such as The Chicago Tribune, New York Magazine and The Advocate, the special gained impressive press coverage across the country. As the highest rated VH1 show of the evening, the program resonated tremendously with the viewing public. For more information, please visit http://www.vh1.com/interact/know_HIV/
