Available in time for teachers to utilize as they plan their curriculum, VH1 will begin VH1 Music Studio’s 2001-2002 Cable in the Classroom programming lineup with a year long series called “Music: A Reflection of the Times”. This educational programming will explore how music both influenced and was affected by social and historical events and will kick off with groundbreaking VH1 documentary series “Say It Loud!: A Celebration of Black Music in America” airing commercial free on October 9, October 16, October 23, October 30 at 4:00 am EST/ 3:00 am CST. Click here for a list of future programming.

“Say It Loud!: A Celebration of Black Music in America” recounts the evolution of urban music’s most powerful and trend-setting genres through firsthand accounts of those who experienced and created the history, including James Brown, and George Clinton. Covering jazz, blues, gospel, and hip-hop through modern R&B and soul, the five-part documentary series also premieres primetime on Sunday, October 7, to Thursday, October 11, at 10:00 p.m. (ET/PT) .

A landmark music series, “Say It Loud!: A Celebration of Black Music in America” was envisioned by executive producer Quincy Jones when he realized that no comprehensive documentary film of this moving story existed. More than 70 artists provide an oral history in this first-ever documentary series to examine the roots of black music.

Below you will find a variety of lesson plans to accompany the broadcast of “Say It Loud!: A Celebration of Black Music" as part of VH1's Cable in the Classroom programming. We hope you and your students will enjoy this once in a lifetime series that supports music and history.
