Recent history has shown that autism is treatable. Symptoms of autism usually appear before age three, but treatment may span a lifetime. Symptoms depend on the severity of the disorder, but may include:

  • Loss or lack of speech around 18 months of age.
  • Little or no eye contact.
  • Loss or lack of gestures, such as pointing or waving.
  • Repetitive speech or actions.
  • Unusual reactions to the way things look, feel, smell, taste or sound.

Early intervention leads to the best outcomes, so it is important to be aware of the symptoms and address them as they are identified. Early intervention programs include educational programs and behavior training programs that emphasize developing language and social skills. While research continues, there are many treatments to consider.

No single treatment works for every child. What works for one child may not work for another, and a successful course of treatment often includes a combination of approaches. Some treatments and therapies used to help individuals with autism have research proving their efficacy, others do not.
