Many consider Africa to be the birthplace of music. Senegalese legends Orchestra Baobab have been bringing this message to international audiences for the past 30 years. Their unique blend of traditional African music crossed with Cuban rhythms is very much like Senegal itself; a melting pot of native and European cultures. So when Baobab invited South African native Dave Matthews and Trey Anastasio of Phish to join them on stage in their hometown of Dakar, Senegal for their first show in 15 years, the two American rock stars jumped at the chance.
It's said that timing is everything. Following an eight-month collaboration on Dave's solo album Some Devil, Dave and Trey will embark on yet another musical journey. Upon the last night of Dave Matthews and Friends tour, Dave and Trey will board a plane and fly halfway around the world to perform for an audience that doesn't know their names much less their music. It's a rare opportunity for them to gain knowledge and inspiration about the roots of music and learn about one of the world's oldest cultures. When Dave and Trey meet their hosts in Dakar, they will find themselves having to overcome language, cultural, and musical hurdles. It's an inspirational and educational journey for both Dave and Trey as they find their place within the finely tuned Orchestra Baobab.
This is a story of strangers in a strange land immersing themselves into an unfamiliar world in an effort to create music.
