Album covers are indelible symbols of what can happen when the boundless creative forces and extravagant minds of the world’s most successful artists and musicians collide. When you add an infusion of corporate label politics plus a significant historical context, the results are anything but ordinary.
50 Greatest Album Covers will finally bring to light the myriad of compelling, undiscovered stories behind the great album covers of history and today, previously unknown to the general public. Here are a few burning questions that will be answered:
What do the digital symbols represent on the cover of The Police’s ‘Ghost in the Machine’? Whose crotch is pictured on the Rolling Stones’ ‘Sticky Fingers’? Just what is that monolith in the cover photo of ‘Who’s Next’, and why is the band urinating on it? Who is the baby in the pool on the cover of Nirvana’s ‘Nevermind’, and where is he now? Is that really a dog on the cover of Beck’s ‘Odelay’ cover, and what does the title mean?
50 Greatest Album Covers will uncover the great stories behind the greatest covers, told first-hand by the people who made it happen: artists such as Norman Seef, Mick Haggerty, and Kevin Reagan, as well as musicians such as Perry Farrell, Gene Simmons, Marilyn Manson, Chuck D. and the Dixie Chicks.
Along the way, viewers will see never-before-seen footage of the unpredictable and sometimes outlandish artistic process, plus unique insight into the philosophy behind cover design and the business of contemporary album art. There will also be a “sneak peak” at some upcoming album covers for major recording artists that are still in the design process.
