Kiss have dropped out of the lineup for Sunday's United We Stand — What More Can I Give benefit in Washington, D.C., because of a medical emergency, while earlier reports that Mick Jagger would participate were premature, according to a
spokesperson for the event.
Kiss singer and guitarist Paul Stanley had initially postponed hip surgery so the group could lend a hand to the benefit, but soon realized he was in too much pain to perform, according to the band's official Web site. "Although I know that at this time I cannot deliver what this audience will expect and deserve," Stanley said in a statement, "as Americans, and as a band that was born in New York, we stand united with everyone involved in this incredible event."
Jagger, who will appear Saturday at the Concert for New York (see "U2's Bono And Edge, DC, Elton, Bowie Join NY Benefit"), was approached to join Sunday's event, but had never confirmed, said the event's publicist, who also represents the Stones' frontman. Jagger has other commitments that prevented him from signing on for Sunday's concert, the publicist said.
The sold-out show will suffer no shortage of star power, however, as 'NSYNC, Backstreet Boys, Aerosmith, Mariah Carey and Michael Jackson are among the artists scheduled to perform (see "Destiny's Child, P. Diddy Added To D.C. Benefit Concert").
Proceeds from the event at RFK Stadium will benefit the American Red Cross Liberty Relief Fund, the Salvation Army Relief Fund and the Pentagon Relief Fund.
