hey drew, if you can't do cannabis because it effects the same dopamine receptors that heroin does, how come you don't make you client's become totally chaste from sex? Sex and every other form of pleasure effect dopamine receptors in the same way. Do you stop your sex addicts from ever having sex? Did you ever stop Jeff from using some kind of pain killer? I would argue that by acting in the way you are acting you are causing your clients to adopt an all or nothing mindset which is something that most addicts have to overcome. The idea that there is only one way to approach sobriety and health, in this case Drew's way, just leads people to give up if they can't do what they have been taught to believe is the only way to ever get healthy and happy. Which is why so many of your clients either go all the way back to abuse or end up dead. This is the fundamental flaw in your approach. No research shows any connection between the abuse of one drug and the abuse of another. Many addicts use replacement therapy as a means to get off of their drug of problem. Your approach is rooted in your self-righteous judgement of a lifestyle rather than on empirical evidence. While polydrug abuse is widespread among people with abuse or dependence disorders, just because someone abuses or is dependent on one drug doesn't mean they can't do another. Many substance abuse specialists, especially those who have a Master's degree or above, are perfectly happy with drug replacement therapy. You surround yourself with counselor's who grandfathered in to a LISAC and won't let even one LPC get into the mix. That's because you know that a Master's level counselor would kick you out of the sessions and stop you from interfering with their clients. While on one hand you spout platitudes like "it's only a matter of time before it goes further" on the other you prescribe drugs to your clients. BS. No defensible peer-reviewed research supports such an assertion. "Marijuana maintanence" as Stephen parrots from you, is actually growing in steam as a method of treating substance abuse for everything from alcohol to heroin. This is known as harm-reduction or replacement therapy. Even you have no problem giving prescription drugs to your clients in order to help them. What's the difference between taking prescription drugs and smoking pot to help you not use another more destructive drug? In Cali, there's no difference. In fact, the side effects and long-term physical destruction of some of the drugs you prescribe are way worse than what pot, especially when eaten or used with a vaporizer, will ever cause. Your statements are opinion, not fact. Pretty sad for a board certified "addictionologist" (whatever the *&%^ that is). Even sadder for anyone with a doctorate. In any field. PS, Bob, its time to move on. You are a good man, despite the fact that you never got a degree in counseling. While I am very unhappy about California grandfathering non degree counselors into the new standards for counselors, you should be helping addicts. You've been there and you care. Just remember that what worked for you doesn't work for everyone. And take the money you've made and get the heck away from Drew. He gives substance abuse treatment a very bad, judgemental image which works against those of us who truly want to help, rather than teach/brainwash, our clients. You, of all the counselors on this show, are truly in the right field. I just think you need a little more schooling and a whole lot of time away from Drew. He's a doctor, he's sees everything in terms of broken and fixed, healthy and sick, black and white. As counselor's we deal with a world that is gray. Which is why we are so much better at this than any medical doctor. We know that there are an infinite number of ways to solve a problem. And we don't believe in the idea that one designed strategem will work for everyone in every situation. Which is what Drew believes. Like all doctors, he was taught that if a patient has these symptoms, this is what is wrong and this is how I treat it. Works great for physical/disease oriented problems. But despite what doctor's have made the world believe, addiction is not just a physical problem or a disease. Its a mental disorder that has to be dealt with as such. The ACA and the APA both agree that mental disorders must be worked at from the level of the client. The client's needs and wants must be paramount. Drew puts his own desires and beliefs before those of his clients. He has no respect for any cultural belief that disagrees with his own. Heck, he doesn't even like research that disagrees with him. How can a person like that ever successfully bond with a client? He's a teacher and an "expert" who forces his clients to accept and internalize his own beliefs, even when the facts show him to be wrong. You're better than that. Open your mind to new ways of thinking. You won't be sorry.`
Bravo on getting rid of the VODKA commercials. Now how bout DR DREW stop prescribing ABILIFY and other psychotropic drugs to these addicts. I cant see how that helps the situation, getting them hooked on legal drugs?
