The talented and unique crop of queens from RuPaul’s Drag Race season 11 are gearing up for their big Ru-veal on February 28th. In anticipation for this epic season, we met up with them at the hit Broadway musical The Prom and asked these gorgeous gals to share their most memorable high school prom moments.

In case you’re not familiar with this stellar production, The Prom follows the journey of an openly gay high school student named Emma who was banned from bringing her girlfriend to the prom. Two seasoned yet forgotten Broadway actors, Dee Dee and Barry, discover Emma’s story on Twitter and flock to her small town in Indiana hoping their involvement in cause will overshadow their latest failed Broadway production. Though they originally seek out Emma to selfishly revive garner some relevance, they end up learning a lesson in selflessness and compassion.

Emma’s story rang true for some of our season 11 queens. Even though many of them didn’t get to live their full truth in high school, they were still able to make prom night an unforgettable one. Flip through the gallery to hear the incredible prom stories of Vanessa Vanjie Mateo, Mercedes Iman Diamond, Shuga Cane and more.

  • 1 Mercedes Iman Diamond
“I went to prom and brought my ex-girlfriend. We broke up that same night. I still had a great time because my friends were there.”

  • 2 Honey Davenport
“I was actually prom king in high school. I had two dates, a boy and a girl. My mom thought the boy was just tagging along with us because he didn’t have a date, but my girlfriend was kind of a cover up. We designed her a sickening dress and we all went together.”

  • 3 Shuga Cane
“I went to prom and had to go with my one of girlfriends. She was one of my best friends so we had a good time. It was fun! The other kids at school are terrible as they always are, but we had a close group of friends so we did our own thing.”

  • 4 Ra’Jah O’Hara
“Unfortunately I had to go to prom with a girl and I couldn’t go as a girl. I will tell you that I made my outfit and went in heels. My grandmother read me the house down boots.”

  • 5 Silky Nutmeg Ganache
“At that time, I had a girlfriend but we broke up before prom. So my four best girlfriends took me to prom. It was amazing.”

  • 6 Vanessa Vanjie
“I didn’t go to prom but if could bring anyone it’d be Ryan Gosling. I’m more in love with his character from The Notebook, but he would be a hot date.”

From the wigs to the shade to the celebrity guest judges, RuPaul’s Drag Race is back and bigger than ever for Season 11, premiering February 28th.
