Their First Date + More Things You Didn't Know About Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka's Relationship

And you thought you had your #RelationshipGoals all figured out...

Just a few weeks after celebrating their one-year wedding anniversary, and Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka still seem like the picture-perfect couple. Don't get us wrong, they definitely are, but every couple, no matter how perfect, has its story. Awkward introductions and unlikely first dates included. Even NPH and his man couldn't escape those. Here are some fun facts you didn't know about the couple that will actually make you view them as fellow humans and give you hope for your own love lives.

David had a boyfriend when they met.

Neil was introduced to this "brooding, James Dean–type guy in a leather jacket" through a friend and initially thought he was straight. He told Out that he quickly learned he was gay and became immediately infatuated: "I was always around when he was around, hoping the stars would align." The two went on a date a week after David and his boyfriend broke up.

They went to the movies on their first date.

It was Taking Lives starring Angelina Jolie.

They're basically twins.

They have the same shoe size, body size, height, and weight and are both Gemini.

NPH fell in love first.

"I initially fell for David harder than he fell for me," he said in Out. "I was in love with him before he was comfortable saying it."

They switch up their roles in bed.

NPH once told Howard Stern he's "versatile" in the bedroom. "The best thing about being in a guy-guy relationship is sometimes you feel like being tough, sometimes you feel like being subordinate.” Rawr.

David proposed to Neil first.

It was on the street corner where they met. A year later, NPH proposed back.

They were together for ten years before they got married.

Like, a whole decade.

The names of their 5-year-old twins Gideon and Harper have special meaning.

Gideon is named after artist Gideon Rubin, whose work they collect. Harper is named after Harper Lee because To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the couple's favorite books.

The twins refer to David as “Daddy” and Neil as “Papa."

Because what could be cuter than that?

Their relationship is not as perfect as it seems.

Neil admits: "I don’t want to paint our relationship like we met and it’s been happy family fantastic-ness ever since. Sometimes I’m deeply in love with David and head-over-heels, and sometimes I question whether it’s going to work out and is meant to be." And David agrees, recognizing their relationship takes work. "I don’t want people to think we’re a perfect couple," he said. "Nothing’s perfect."
