You Need to Watch Spencer From 'Pretty Little Liars' Kiss a Girl in This 'Romeo & Juliet' Reboot

This is awesome.

I've never been a huge William Shakespeare fan, but after this new kick-ass film, consider me converted.

Troian Bellisario (Spencer from Pretty Little Liars) stars in the upcoming short movie Still a Rose that retells the story of Sir Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet through an LGBT lens. An additional female actor and two male actors star alongside Troian in the film. Troian plays one of two Juliets (there are two Romeos), and all four characters make appearances telling the story of two star-crossed lovers. That means girls kiss girls, boys kiss boys and everything in between. It quite literally turns the damsel-in-distress nature of R&J on its head. And cheers to that. Check out the trailer below.

My biggest criticism of R&J is the dependency Juliet has on Romeo. Something about it always felt anti-feminist to me. But this retelling changes my perception entirely. Because the genders of Romeo and Juliet interchange per scene, it becomes more about pure love and less about archaic roles. It's socially progressive, and other movies should follow suit. Wouldn't it be great if more movies embraced gender fluidity when casting? Maybe then women will finally start getting paid the same as men for acting gigs. I can dream, right?

This movie is a colossal step in the right direction. Bravo, babes! (It screens in New York City Oct. 25.)
