I get that Victoria’s Secret has built its brand on the fantasy of staring at stunningly beautiful models whose bodies are unattainable to the average woman. They’re almost godly and mystically inhuman. But it’s 2015, and the fact that the brand hasn’t done anything to shake things up since the show started in the ’90s, and by things, I mean the diversity of their models, really pisses me off.
The lineup of VS Angels and models walking the 2015 VS Fashion Show next week has been revealed. There are 44. (You can see the full list here.) Here’s what the racial breakdown looks like:
White = 31
Black = 5
Multiracial = 5
Asian = 2
Hispanic = 1
There is a very obvious, tired tip of the scale here towards white women, and this comes from a white woman. Everyone seems to be pretty pumped about the addition of familiar faces like Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, but why isn’t anyone else pointing out that after over 15 years, there still aren’t more racially diverse ladies representing the brand? And in addition, any plus-sized models? Get Ashley Graham out there A-f—ing-SAP. Or, the history-making Robyn Lawley, who was the first plus-sized model featured in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue this year.
Every year I tune in to the show expecting to be delightfully surprised by the addition of curvaceous, totally average or everyday women strutting their stuff, and every year, I’m disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, the ladies walking the runway earn it, work it and are absolutely gorgeous. Would just be nice to see more girls like you and me up there.
One more thing. Considering the massive strides we’ve made in the LGBT community this year alone with trailblazers like Caitlyn Jenner and Ruby Rose, why don’t we get to see any transgender women or gender fluid models working the sexy lingerie the brand has to offer? We’ve been on such a roll this year, spreading awareness and sensitivity for these groups, and it feels like this show is just bringing the glorious momentum to an abrupt stop. Including ladies like these would’ve made the show so epic and game-changing. As I said, it’s disappointing.
But hey, there’s always next year and maybe VS will finally get it right.
