Let’s face it: We all love a good proposal. There is something about a bae getting down on one knee and professing his/her love to another human that makes the world feel slightly less sh-ty. Whether it’s done intimately in bed or in front of a stadium full of drunken THOTs, proposals remind us that ~true love~ conquers all. And diamonds. Diamonds do, too.
Pop culture has a buffet of bomb-ass proposals. From the small screen–Chandler and Monica, obvs–to our own Love & Hip Hop, celebrities know how to pop the question right. Orrrr at least in a way we’ll never forget.
These 14 are the most memorable. Check ’em out, and be sure to watch your favorite rom-coms on VH1’s 14 Days of Love.
Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, A Walk to Remember (2002)
Seriously, no man will ever love me like Landon (Shane West). After building Jamie (Mandy Moore) a freakin’ telescope, he proposes to her knowing she has terminal leukemia. He did it so she could fulfill her wish of getting married in her parents’ church. Are you not sobbing on the floor yet?
Neil and Beth, He’s Just Not That Into You (2009)
Beth (Jennifer Aniston) had given up on trying to get Neil (Ben Affleck) to tie the knot when he threw her this amazing curveball. The couple is sorting through clothes when Beth finds a pair of Neil’s cargo pants she detests. As she is throwing them out, she reaches into a pocket and finds–gasp–an engagement ring. She turns around to find Neil on one knee. And the rest is history. Who knew so much good could come from cargo pants?!
Ludacris and Eudoxie Agnan (2014)
Proposal at 20,000 feet. Ludacris asked the big Q to Agnan in a way only Ludacris can: He took her up in a private jet and projected “Eudoxie Will You Marry Me” in blue letters on the ground. We wonder if they joined the mile high club right after?
P!nk and Carey Hart (2005)Getty Images
P!nk proposed to Hart at the Pro 250 class finals in Mammoth, California by literally writing, “Will you marry me?” on a pit board as Hart drove around the track. When he didn’t stop, she wrote on a separate board, “I’m serious!” Thankfully, he got the memo, parked his car and scooped up his girl. Talk about a heart-racing proposal, eh?
Chrissy Lampkin and Jim Jones, Love & Hip Hop (2011)
Johnny Cash and June Carter, Walk the Line (2005)
It takes a lot of faith for a man to propose in front of an audience, but that’s just what Johnny (Joaquin Phoenix) did in this scene. June (Reese Witherspoon) was hesitant at first, but she eventually said yes. Overcome with emotion…or foreshadowing of bad things to come?
Andrew Hennings and Melanie Carmichael, Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
This is every material girl’s dream: Patrick Dempsey brings you to a Tiffany’s, proposes and lets you pick from a smorgasbord of rocks. This scene=goals. Actual goals.
Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey (2008)Getty
Carey received not one but two proposals. First, Cannon popped the question by giving Carey a Ring Pop with a 17-carat rock inside it. Then, he “kidnapped” her, took her on a helicopter ride and proposed again. Why? She always “dreamed” about being kidnapped. -___-
Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (2014)Getty Images
Who can forget the time Yeezy casually rented out the AT&T Park stadium, hired a 50-piece orchestra and splashed the words, “PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!” on a Jumbotron for Lady Kardashian? It’s just the kind of gaudy, over-the-top gesture we’d expect from West. And we loved every bit of it.
Trevor and Hilary, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air (1994)
Trevor gets the grand slam idea of proposing to Hilary while bungee-jumping on national TV. Spontaneous, right? Sweet, right? Yes–if the bungee chord doesn’t break and Trevor lands safely. It doesn’t.
Stevie J., Joseline Hernandez and Mimi Faust, Love & Hip Hop Atlanta (2013)
On what planet did Stevie J. think it would be OK to give both Hernandez and Faust engagement rings? At the same time. This isn’t exactly romantic–far from it–but it is memorable, and that’s why this ish makes our list.
Mr. Big and Carrie Bradshaw, Sex and the City (2008)
Mr. Big (Chris Noth) messed with Carrie’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) head for 10 miserable years, but he finally got it right. And by right, we mean proposing to Carrie–a known shoe aficionado–with a glossy Manolo Blahnik pump. Now there’s a man who knows his woman.
Monica Geller and Chandler Bing, Friends (2000)
In a bizarre twist in the show’s sixth season finale, Monica flips the script and proposes to Chandler, who tried to pop the question himself earlier in the episode–and failed. (Monica ends up getting too emotional, allowing Chandler to take the reins and finally do what Friends fans were waiting for.) Everything about this scene is iconic, from Monica’s candle-drenched Greenwich Village apartment to Chandler’s blubbering, beautiful tears. If you don’t get goosebumps after watching this, you’re definitely a cyborg.
Luke Harrison and Isabel Kelly, Stepmom (1998)
Ed Harris doesn’t have to do much to be sexy. However, his proposal scene to Julia Roberts in Stepmom is next level. Get this: He gives Isabel a box with a spool of thread inside. Then, he says it: “Even when things are hard and you feel like giving up, you have to hang on to that decision, that choice to love each other. Even if it’s only by a thread. I let that thread break once. This time, it won’t. Will you marry me?” To top off this amazing gesture, he puts the ring inside the thread and slides it onto Isabel’s finger. Jeez, and I just want a nice dinner at Applebee’s.
