Surprising Celebrities Who’ve Used Surrogates

Tyra Banks isn't the only celeb who's gotten a gestational carrier to help make a family.

Thanks to modern medicine, the miracle of life can happen in more ways than one, and gestational surrogacy has proven to be a great option for those hopeful parents who are unable to give birth to their own children.

Most recently, model-turned-reality mogul Tyra Banks surprised the world with her new bundle of joy, York Banks Asla, publicly thanking the “angel of a woman that carried [her] miracle baby” and doting on his tiny familiar features, like how he has her “fingers and big eyes” and boyfriend Erik Asla’s “mouth and chin.”

This is the Happiest Valentine's Day of my life. York, Daddy @erikasla and I send you so much love.

Banks added that she and Asla “worked and prayed so hard” for their little one and “pray for everyone who struggles to reach this joyous milestone.”

The America’s Next Top Model star joins a rapidly growing group of celebs who’ve had a little help in the pregnancy process.

The comedic Tonight Show host might be a barrel of nightly laughs and high jinks, but he and his wife Nancy Juvoven experienced a lot of “awful” fertility hardships before deciding to hire a pregnancy proxy to bring their daughter Winnie into the world in 2013. The couple went back for a second round to usher in the birth of their second daughter Frances Cole in 2014, and the father of two went on to literally write the book on being a proud “dada.”

Angela Bassett and her husband Courtney B. Vance spent several years being consistently “devastated” by failed fertility treatments before finally deciding to opt for surrogacy. But the wait paid off because their fraternal twins Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah were born happy, healthy and completely gorg in 2006. LOOK at those cheeks.

  3. Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick

The Sex & the City star carried her first child James Wilkie — and was even visibly preggers on a few episodes of the show — but she could not have a successful pregnancy after his birth due to medical issues. So, SJP shopped out the gestational gig, and her and hubby Matthew Broderick’s twin daughters, Marion Loretta and Tabitha Hodge, were born via surrogate in 2009.

After Nicole Kidman gave birth to little Sunday Rose, her first daughter with husband Keith Urban, in 2008, the Oscar-winning actress famously struggled to conceive a second baby and turned to a surrogate to bring their second daughter Faith Margaret into the world in 2011.

The Star Wars filmmaker and his wife Mellody Hobson didn’t have to journey all the way to a galaxy far, far away to bring their daughter Everest into the world, but they did turn to a surrogate to add Lucas’ brood of three adopted children Amanda, Katie and Jett.

The Elementary star proudly introduced little Rockwell Lloyd Liu to the world via gestational carrier last August, sharing this sweet shot of herself and “the new little man” in her life. If he’s anything like his mom, he’s going to slay so hard, guys.

The Hunger Games star and husband Max Handelman are the proud parents of two little boys thanks to gestational surrogacy after suffering several unsuccessful attempts at pregnancy. “It helps that other moms had said that once they had their babies, they forgot they were ever pregnant,” Banks told Women’s Health of her decision to hire a helping belly. “So once my focus became the baby and not the pregnancy, it was a very easy decision.” And success! Little Felix was born in 2011, and Magnus followed in 2012.

  8. Mike Coppola/FilmMagic

The legendary actor has six children — three of which were born via surrogacy. His latest addition with wife Grace Hightower, named Helen Grace, was born via surrogate in 2011. Any wagers as to which of his iconic lines the kiddo uttered first?

The Fast and Furious star and husband Andrew Form welcomed their son Julian into the world in 2013 via surrogacy after the star learned she “couldn’t carry a baby” on her own. “It’s the most intimate leap of faith and trust you can take,” she said of the trying process. After the baby’s birth, though, we assume she was just 😍😍😍😍 for the restie.

  10. Ellen Pompeo and Chris Ivery

The Grey’s Anatomy star carried her first daughter Stella Luna to term successfully, but she and husband Chris Ivery’s second child Sienna May was born via surrogate in 2014, and she dropped the surprise news once the kiddo was a few weeks old.

“This baby was born via surrogate, so I felt an obligation to keep the surrogate’s privacy. That was of utmost importance to me,” she said of her bombshell birth announcement. She then thanked her colleagues from the show for keeping her news private until she was ready to reveal Sienna to the world via one very feels-inducing Instagram tribute.

  11. Adrienne Maloof

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star was none too thrilled when her co-star Brandi Glanville when she (accidentally?) blurted out the fact that her then-six-year-old twins Christian and Colin were born via surrogate on national TV. Adrienne had reportedly suffered complications during the birth of her first son Gavin, so she and hubby Paul Nassif hired a surrogate for the second round of baby-making, but it was a “precious” secret for the couple and she said the unexpected reveal “destroyed” her family.

  12. Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese soccer star’s adorbs little mini-me Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. was born to a surrogate mother in June, 2010 while he was at the World Cup in South Africa. Ronaldo announced the happy news via social media, writing, “It is with great joy and emotion that I inform I have recently become father to a baby boy.” The two have been twinning it up with ample swagger ever since.
