Zoolander 2 opens in theaters nationwide today, and “Blue Steel Face” fans are going absolutely bonkers. It’s a sequel that’s been 15 years in the making, and we’re so pumped it is finally here.
But before Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) hit the big screen, he was a skit crafted by us at VH1. Yes, once upon a time, we hosted the VH1 Fashion Awards, and Zoolander was a part of our show in 1996. It was that year when the world met Derek, a male model who loves himself pretty much more than anything else on Earth. He sometimes stumbles when he runway walks and has a difficult time remembering not to shave for photo-shoots, but, hey, he is lovable. And also a handsome devil.
Zoolander quickly became a sensation, slaying the VH1 Fashion Awards and eventually landing a movie deal. He’s one of our most impressive alumni. Relive Derek’s first-ever appearance in the VH1 sketch above. You’re about to feel really old.
