12 Former Celebrity Friendships That Went Down in Flames

Grab the boxing gloves, these ex-besties are about to square up!

-By Danielle Kent

Celebrities are just like us—minus the fancy trips, glamorous parties, and red carpet premieres. They laugh, they cry, they even trip over their own feet while walking down the street. And like us, no celebrity is complete without their bestie.

Isn’t it great to have a best friend? They’re always there to love and support you and, if nothing else, they’re there to wear the other half of your “Best Friends 4Ever” necklace. But sometimes a beautiful friendship can end in a not-so-beautiful blowout.

We’ve put together a list of our favorite celebrity ex-besties whose relationships ended publicly and in a big way.Sometimes it was just temporary, and other times they were dunzo for good.

Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian

Kim and Paris were childhood friends who grew up together and were always close. Hilton was, at the time, much wealthier and more well-known than Kim. Then Kim made an attempt to break into the industry by serving as Hilton's assistant and stylist. That seemed to really change the dichotomy of their relationship and, according to some sources, Kim eventually grew sick of Hilton's mistreatment. Ms. K eventually found success of her own after her now-infamous sex tape with rapper Ray J was released. Though the two are no longer friends, they both wish each other well.

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie

Paris and Nicole were once the quintessential bougie besties, starring together on Fox's The Simple Life and generally making fools of themselves. But we loved them! And since both stars seemed to have similar glamorous upbringings and silly senses of humor, their friendship made sense. As Paris' celebrity continued to grow and Nicole's remained stagnant, rumors began to circulate that Nicole was jealous of Paris. One report even said that Nicole hosted a screening party where she aired a private sex tape of Paris' in an attempt to embarrass her. Others said that Nicole's transition into married life made it difficult to keep up with Paris' partying ways.

Taylor Swift and Katy Perry

Though these two never started out as "besties," they did have a great working relationship and often sent praise and discussed collaborations via Twitter. Katy even brought Taylor Swift on stage with her to perform her hit song, "Hot N Cold," during her 2010 Fearless tour. Enter John Mayer. Taylor and John famously dated in 2010 and things did not end well, resulting in Taylor's scathing song, "Dear John." You know, the one that goes: "Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone/ Don't you think I was too young to be messed with?" Ouch. Two years later, Katy and John began their on-again/ off-again love affair. Obviously this did not mean good things for Taylor and Katy's friendship. Countless snarky remarks have been made since, and "Bad Blood" is apparently a subtle dis track. Neither party seems to be backing down and this fight is very much ongoing.

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera

Starring together in 1993's hit show Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, baby Britney and baby Christina were best pals. Who would have known that years later both women would be shaking their butts on MTV? "Baby One More Time" and "Genie in a Bottle" were both released just before the turn of the millennium and both stars got their first tastes of success. Obviously that was just the beginning and both stars have since assumed their roles as pop titans, but there were a lot of twists and turns (and shaved heads) along the way.

Some people think the feud was completely fabricated— the usual paparazzi attempts to pit celebrities against each other. That may be true, but there has certainly been some very real name-calling. Christina accused Britney of being absent and difficult to work with during the rehearsals for their now famous MTV VMA performance in 2003 featuring Madonna. She has also called Britney "a lost little girl" and implied that she and her then husband, Kevin Federline, were trailer trash. Britney struck back claiming that Christina was the lost one and that she had been very hurt by those comments. Then 2007 happened and Britney really seemed to lose it. She has since regained a majority of the marbles that she lost, but it took a while for her to regain the public image. Christina stayed relatively quiet and eventually dealt with paparazzi scrutiny of her own regarding her weight fluctuation. Now both stars seem to have moved on from the drama of years past. Christina now serves as a coach on The Voice and Britney began a two-year residency at Las Vegas' Planet Hollywood in late 2013. They now seem friendly and supportive of each other. Yay for girl power!

Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez

These Disney sweethearts were inseparable until Lovato's breakdown in 2010. Prior to her brief stint in a rehab clinic, Lovato's friends and family had noticed that she was not acting like herself. That put a lot of stress on her relationship with Selena and there were rumors that their friendship had completely dissolved. There were rumors that Taylor Swift created issues in their friendship when she and Gomez became closer, leaving Lovato to fend for herself. Since Lovato's successful recovery and revitalized music career, the two have rekindled their friendship and seem to be doing well despite not being as close as they once were.

Rihanna and Ciara

These two may not have been besties, but they did walk the red carpet together on numerous occasions and the pair seemed chummy. Then the infamous RiRi v. Ciara Twitter Battle of 2011 happened and I think it's safe to say that whatever friendship that once existed is certainly irreparable now. Ciara seems to have provoked the argument, claiming that Rihanna was "a b-tch" to her during an appearance on E!'s Fashion Police. Well, Rihanna does not seem to love being called a bitch. She tweeted, “My bad ci, did I 4get to tip u? #howrudeofme” and the rest was history. The amount of virtual hair pulling that went down was very real.

Heidi Montag and Lauren Conrad

Lauren Conrad was a complete unknown before 2004, and then Laguna Beach happened. We grew to love 18-year-old Lauren and the tense relationship between her and her total frenemy, Kristin Cavallari. Lauren grew up a lot throughout the three seasons of the show and eventually she left her high school friends behind to attend FIDM in Los Angeles. It was there that she met her new bestie and roommate, Heidi Montag, who would later become her co-star on The Hills. Lauren and Heidi had some struggles during the initial season of the show, but by and large they were extremely close. Lauren continued to attend FIDM and Heidi found it to be too difficult, so she began working for a production company. It was challenging at first for Heidi to allow Lauren the time necessary to balance academics and a social life, but the real issues came to fruition when Heidi started dating Spencer Pratt.

Allegedly, Pratt started a rumor that LC had made a sex tape with her ex, Jason Wahler. Cue the famous "You know what you did!" uttered by a teary-eyed Lauren during a heated confrontation with Montag. Conrad denies that this sex tape exists and the Montags continue to maintain that it does. By season three of the show, Heidi and Spencer were in their own isolated little world and they seemed to detach themselves from people besides just LC, like longtime friend Brody Jenner. By the fifth season, Speidi was off the show completely. Since The Hills ended, Lauren has gone on to develop a booming career for herself out of the spotlight, designing clothing for her line LC Lauren Conrad and living a quiet life with her husband. Spencer and Heidi are still together and they are doing the complete opposite, capitalizing on their roles as the villains and appearing on several reality shows since The Hills like I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! and Celebrity Big Brother. They continue to publicly badmouth Conrad and the producers of the show whenever they have the chance (though LC and the rest of the world have long since moved past it), so this one-sided fight shows no signs of cooling down.

Blake Lively and Leighton Meester

Gossip Girl was on the air from 2007 to 2012 and during that time Blake Lively and Leighton Meester became household names. On the show the pair played the lead protagonists, Serena and Blair, who were almost always besties except when they absolutely hated each other for a day. Did that relationship translate off screen? There have been many mixed opinions about that. Some say the two started out as friends and through butting heads while working on the show they drifted apart. Others say that things were a lot more heated and involved some backstage shade-throwing. Both parties give perfectly scripted response regarding the argument and deny it completely. Either way, Gossip Girl must have a fantastic PR team because this beef was either nonexistent or seamlessly covered up.

The Hollywood "It" Girls and Lindsey Lohan

There was a time when LiLo, Nicole, and Paris (and Kim K before she was Kim K) frequently roamed the streets of Los Angeles together in a drunken stupor. They were the Hollywood It Girls of the early 2000s who partied hard and got paid just to show up at fancy parties and cause a scene. Nicole eventually cleaned up her act, though, admitting herself into rehab and eventually going on to become a successful business woman, wife, and mother. Paris, though less successful than she's been in years past, is still happily working on her music career.

Lindsay has very publicly taken a different path than her ex-BFF's and between rehab stints and run-ins with the law, she doesn't seem to have much else going on. It makes sense that the gang is no longer tight-knit. Before the friend group matured and naturally drifted apart, though, they did have an embarrassing falling out. Nicole and Paris (and the rest of their rich hot friends) had known each other for years and as soon as Paris and Nicole began to turn on Lindsay, the rest of the bunch followed suit. Lindsay was turned away from clubs that Nicole and Paris were partying at and quite a few public altercations went down. Then the infamous video began to circulate in which Brandon Davis, a friend of Paris and Nicole, called Lindsay a "firecrotch." The term unfortunately stuck and has since become immortalized in pop culture history.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Winona Ryder

These two celebs were super tight back in the '90s. Gwyneth had not yet starred in any huge films, but she certainly had gained recognition from smaller roles with actors like Brad Pitt and John Travolta. At this point, Winona was wildly popular after already having starred in a slew of cult classics like Beetlejuice, The Heathers, and Edward Scissorhands. Come 1998, though, everything changed; this was the year that Gwyneth finally got her big break playing the lead in Shakespeare in Love, a role that she would eventually earn her a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, and recognition from SAG.

Fans began to notice that Winona and Gwyneth were no longer pictured together. Rumors swirled that months prior Winona had attempted to go behind Gwyneth's back to audition for the same role she would eventually play in Shakespeare in Love, essentially attempting to snatch it from Gwen. Years later, immediately after Winona's run-in with the law, Gwyneth wrote a very ambiguous and dare I say shady blog post: "Back in the day, I had a 'frenemy' who, as it turned out, was pretty hellbent on taking me down. I restrained myself from fighting back. I tried to take the high road. But one day I heard that something unfortunate and humiliating had happened to this person. And my reaction was deep relief and happiness." So is Gwen over it? Nope!

Tiffani Thiesen and Jennie Garth

We all knew that Shannen Doherty was infamous for stirring up drama on the set of Beverly Hills: 90210, but she wasn't the only one. Thiessen was cast to replace Doherty on the show and Thiessen has since said that when she first took on the role, Garth was not having it. She seemed to pick on Thiessen for no reason, but eventually felt guilty and figured she should try to make amends. Her attempts were not in vain; the two would eventually develop a deep and lasting friendship! Thiessen was a bridesmaid in Garth's first wedding and she was reportedly present during the birth of Garth's first child. Nothing could tear this duo apart. Or so they thought. For reasons that both parties choose not to disclose, this duo is going through quite the Cold War. At any public appearances since the feud, the actresses refuse to even look at each other. Thiessen claims she was the one who was wronged, though she has since moved on. She recently discussed the fight with Howard Stern, saying "It’s funny, our relationship started really rough and ended the way it started.”

Heather Locklear and Denise Richards

These two stars, once so inseparable that they bought houses next to each other, went from best friends to two points on a crazy Hollywood love triangle. Heather was married to Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora and Denise was married to Charlie Sheen (before he had pumping tiger blood through his veins). For a while things were perfect and the two couples were great pals, but things eventually fizzled out (as most Hollywood relationships seem to do). Denise and Charlie were the first of the foursome to divorce with Heather and Richie following suit soon after.

Though the Sambora-Locklear separation was still super fresh, Denise and Richie started getting spotted by the paparazzi looking awfully cuddly. Locklear began accusing Richards of breaking up her marriage, claiming that Richards had seduced Sambora into an affair before his marriage had even ended. Richards claims that her friendship with Locklear was already over prior to her relationship with Sambora, but Heather maintains that this was not the case. Denise and Richie had a fairly long relationship and eventually began planning a new union of their own, but the engagement was broken off. The alleged reason for the split? Sambora was convinced that Richards and Sheen still harbored feelings for one another. These guys must live for perpetual relationship drama.
