Grab a Kleenex, because we are losing a show that could make up its very own Very Special Episode list. Yes, Degrassi, the greatest Canadian export this side of maple syrup is ending after 14 seasons.
The show is going out over the course of a two-week finale that begins with an hour-long episode on July 20. New episodes will air every day on TeenNick until the final finale on July 31. From Variety:
“For an incredible 14 seasons, ‘Degrassi’ has been a groundbreaking show tackling so many important topics that real teens face in their everyday lives,” said Keith Dawkins, SVP and general manager, Nicktoons, TeenNick and Nick Jr. “In the final episodes on TeenNick and through the hour-long special and social activations, we hope to say goodbye in a way that is both fitting to the show and ‘Degrassi’s’ passionate fan base.”
Of course, in the States, Degrassi is best known as the launchpad for Drake, aka, Wheelchair Jimmy.
But he’s not the only cultural icon to appear on the show. There was that time Jay and Silent Bob appeared.
And it’s where Vampire Diaries’s Nina Dobrev got her start (and Shenae Grimes-Beech from the 90210 reboot).
UPDATE: According to Entertainment Weekly, Degrassi is leaving TeenNick in July but could find a home on another network.
