Celebrities Who Weirdly Turned into Their Significant Others

Now Kim Kardashian is tweeting like Kanye West...

It’s inevitable that you’ll take on some of your significant other’s attributes when you begin dating. However, it’s one thing to switch up your taste in movies because your boyfriend likes horror flicks. It’s quite another to take on his British accent when you’re from Michigan. Madonna, we’re looking at you.

And we’re also looking at Kim Kardashian, Brad Pitt and several others. These celebrities were so into their partners, they basically became them–crazy tweeting skills and all. Granted, some reverted back to their old selves after ditching said bae. A few still have a case of identity crisis. Here are five prime examples.

  • Madonna and Guy Ritchie

People noticed something odd when Madonna got involved with English director Ritchie in 1998: She started talking in a British accent. It was mild at first, but by 2005–five years into her marriage with Ritchie–Madge was speaking like a full-blown Queen Elizabeth heiress. (Please direct your attention to this laughable four-second clip.) And it wasn’t just the accent: Madonna moved to England, started feeding chickens, went to pubs and talked incessantly about ale while betrothed to Ritchie. After they split ways in 2008, Madonna’s accent waned, and she reverted back to her my-sugar-is-raw sass. Chickens in short supply. Coincidence or nah?

  • Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin

Like Madonna, Paltrow became noticeably posher when she married English Coldplay rocker Martin in 2003. (Granted, she was already a pseudo-Brit with roles in 1996’s Emma and 1998’s Shakespeare in Love, but things escalated after the marriage.) Her accent wasn’t as insane, but she did take the elitist aristocrat aesthetic to obnoxious heights. “I’d rather smoke crack than eat cheese from a can,” she told one British talk show in 2011, and that’s just one of many quotes in the Paltrow-denouncing-American-culture catalog. “I love the English way, which is not as capitalistic as it is in America,” she said in 2006. “People don’t talk about work and money; they talk about interesting things at dinner parties.” Her daughter even called her “Mummy” at one point. She is from Los Angeles.

  • Britney Spears and Kevin Federline

BritBrit was America’s Southern belle–the pop princess girl next door with just the right amount of twang and sex appeal. However, when Spears got involved with K-Fed–a trucker hat-clad back-up dancer with a penchant for wife-beaters and dirty jeans–the “Slave 4 U” singer’s image changed. She too started wearing trucker hats, walked barefoot in a public restroom and embraced her roots “Redneck Woman”-style. The couple’s tragic UPN reality show Britney & Kevin: Chaotic proved they were morphing into one Fanta-soaked human. Thankfully, when Brit kicked K-Fed to the curb in 2006, she ditched the trucker hats, too. (But kept the Fanta…because Fanta.)

  • Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Before getting with Jolie, Pitt wasn’t extremely publicly active in the humanitarian world. However, after becoming Angie’s main squeeze, he put his do-gooder hat on a million times over. It started early in their relationship: a 2006 trip to Haiti to show support for Wyclef Jean’s charity Yéle Haïti. They donated money the next year to Darfur charities. He founded the Make It Right Foundation on his own in 2006 and started the Jolie-Pitt Foundation with his wife the same year. Mind you, all of this was within two years of uniting with Jolie (a modern-day Mother Teresa) in the first place. This is an example of good spousal influence, to be honest. Mr. and Mrs. Smith save the world.

  • Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kardashian’s sudden presence in the fashion community has a lot to do with West. Also, her style has evolved from splashy and colorful to more demure (read: boring) since getting with Yeezus. (Don’t tell that to Kimmy, though, because she is “mortified” of those old outfits now.) However, we really realized she was becoming him during her topless selfie scandal in early March. Instead of quietly accepting criticism from celebrities like Bette Midler and Chloe Grace Moretz, Kardashian clapped back at them ’Ye-style. The bold move has her husband’s name written all over it, which can only mean one thing: The two are morphing into one, selfie-obsessed monster. *Cue dramatic horror movie music.*
