Madonna Brought Out an Amazing Guest During Her Prince Tribute at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards

The Queen did Prince justice.

Madonna gave a poignant tribute to the late Prince at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards Sunday night (May 22). Dressed in a frilled purple-toned suit that screamed Prince, the pop legend belted out “Nothing Compares 2 U”–the track Prince wrote for Sinead O’Connor–with pitch-perfect smoothness. She appeared revered throughout the number, the perfect tone for this tribute. It was a short, beautiful moment.

But it wasn’t Madonna who stole the show here. It was her surprise guest: Stevie Wonder. Madge welcomed Wonder to the stage after she wrapped “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and the two took on Prince’s greatest hit “Purple Rain.”

Well, them and the entire BBMAs audience. Watching everyone sing “Purple Rain”–cell phones lit–along with Madonna and Wonder was a truly beautiful sight. Rihanna particularly enjoyed the performance, miming enthusiastically and at times appearing choked up.

Madonna’s Prince homage was everything it needed to be: respectful, simple and emotional. Bravo to the Queen of Pop (and Mr. Wonder). You did the Prince justice.
