Queen Latifah Is the First Honoree Announced for 'VH1 Hip Hop Honors'

All hail the Queen!

Hip hop fans, are you ready for this news?

We know you're already pumped about VH1 Hip Hop Honors returning after a six-year hiatus, but wait until you hear who is being honored. This year's theme is All Hail the Queens, focusing on the women who broke the rap glass ceiling and became heavyweights in the male-dominated genre. And who better to kick off the honoree announcements than one of hip hop's OG females, Queen Latifah?!

Yes, VH1 announced today (June 13) Queen Latifah is one of several honorees for 2016's Hip Hop Honors. And with seven Grammy nominations (and one win), an Academy Award nomination, Golden Globe Award and Emmy Award that all display her musical prowess, she more than deserves this honor.

Queen Latifah began her hip hop career with the 1988 album, All Hail the Queen, which featured the classic feminist anthem "Ladies First." She went on to release five rap albums that broke barriers for their candid discussion of Black female issues like domestic violence, catcalling and relationships. Queen Latifah also has two jazz albums to her name, which showcase both her vocal and style diversity.

Queen Latifah is a once-in-blue-moon talent, and we're so excited to honor her at VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens. Be on the lookout for our other honoree announcements this week!
