It’s Insane How Much Hip Hop Dancing Has Changed Through the Years

Tanisha Scott and the Banji Twerk Team take us through the evolution.

Dance is one of the most important parts of hip hop. From dance crazes to video vixens, movement is just as important to the genre as a great verse. We’re so excited to celebrate hip hop dance when VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens airs live July 11 at 9 p.m. on VH1. But we’re impatient, so let’s get the party started early, shall we?

We asked acclaimed choreographer Tanisha Scott and the talented ladies of the Banji Twerk Team to dance their way through hip hop’s most iconic moves form the 1970s to 2010s, and it’s crazy how much the art has evolved. Don’t take our word for it, though. Watch the video below, and be amazed at how feeling the beat of the genre went from being in your B-Boy stance to dabbing on ’em. Everything is so different from then to now but still is quintessentially hip hop.
