VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail the Queens airs live tonight (July 11) at 9 p.m./8c on VH1. The night will be doubly special for our honoree Lil’ Kim, because it’s also her birthday. Everyone from her fellow honorees like Queen Latifah to VH1 stars like Remy Ma can’t wait to see Lil’ Kim at the show. We sat down with a few of the celebrities attending Hip Hop Honors, and they couldn’t stop raving about Lil’ Kim. And for good reason! The woman is an icon of astronomical proportions.
“Before me and Kim are friends, I am a fan of Kim,” HHH honoree Missy Elliott said. “You hear people sing with conviction. [Lil’ Kim] raps with conviction.”
And Queen Latifah agrees. “I had never seen anything like Lil’Kim touch a stage,” she said. “With all these dudes on stage–this big crowd– and she couldn’t wait to eat it up. And she ate ’em up.”
Several Love & Hip Hop stars are also awestruck by Lil’ Kim, including Yandy. “Lil’ Kim, to me, is so hip-hop,” she said. “She does what she wants to do when she wants to do it, and she dares you to have a problem with it.”
Yandy is undoubtedly referring to Lil’ Kim’s unapologetic expression of her sexuality, something Remy Ma admires about the rapper. “[Lil’ Kim] went through different phases…Sexy, raunchy–it was always in that scheme,” Remy Ma said.
That sexiness lives on in Lil’ Kim’s videos and photos, including that infamous Hard Core leopard bikini. DJ Self recalls getting in trouble for having that photo hanging in his bedroom. “I got the whooping of my life,” he said. “I still got that picture today. I had to take it down, but I still have the picture today.”
As do we. Watch these celebrities and more talk all things Lil’ Kim in the videos above, and tune into VH1 Hip Hop Honors tonight!
