5 Things To Know About Emmy Winner Rami Malek

A few things you may not have known about this year's surprise Emmy-winner.

Rami Malek has been playing the genius-hacker Elliot Alderson on Mr. Robot for two seasons, and his Emmy win in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series was a bit of a surprise, given his competition: Kevin Spacey, Bob Odenkirk, Kyle Chandler, Liev Schreiber, and Matthew Rhys were his fellow nominees. But who is the man behind the pill-popping, demon-battling leader of fsociety? Here are a few fun facts:

His first television role was on Gilmore Girls in 2004.

We knew there was a reason he looked familiar! Malek, 35, has also appeared in HBO's The Pacific, Night at the Museum, Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and the short-lived sitcom The War At Home.

His Instagram account has literally one photo.

And it was only taken for a bit he did on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.

He attended Sherman Oaks High School in California.

His classmates include Rachel Bilson, Katharine McPhee, and Kirsten Dunst.

He has a twin brother named Sami...who thought he was going to lose at the Emmys.

E! reported from the Emmys red carpet that Rami's brother "jokingly told him he should probably practice doing a grateful loser face rather than write an acceptance speech." Joke's on you, Sami!

He is of Egyptian descent.

Malek has discussed his ethnicity in past interviews, explaining "Five or 10 years ago, I would have never been considered for the lead of a show. Even going into the audition it was like: ‘No way. Ultimately they’re going to go with someone who looks more conventional, someone society would be more accepting of.'"
