Snoop Dogg received the “I Am Hip-Hop” award at the BET Hip-Hop Awards 2016. After thanking BET for the platform to be himself and speak his mind, he went straight into “Uncle Snoop” mode sharing an insightful message towards the young rappers coming up in the game.
“A lot of people don’t understand y’all, and y’all are misunderstood. They didn’t understand me neither. So you have to keep pushing, stay who you are, be original, and be diverse,” he encouraged. “As a young artist you always have to be who you are because at the end of the day you have to live with who you are. I am content. I love who I’ve been through my whole journey. I ain’t never been anyone but me and I’m going to continue to be me.”
The OG West coast rapper goes on to praise the current state hip-hop and taking pride in his role as an uncle to this generation of MCs.
“I’m thankful to have been given the position to speak to people, to mentor people, to become Uncle Snoop, and not to become some old bitter rapper who’s mad because the young MCs are having it. That’s not me.”
