Hillary Clinton Took a Page Out of Michelle Obama’s Book at the #Debate

No Melania Trump.

By Brenden Gallagher

In an attempt to sling mud at the Clinton campaign following the scandal around leaked audio of a sexist comments made in 2005, Donald Trump went after Bill Clinton. Under the pretense of a pre-campaign press conference, Trump took to Facebook Live with a panel of past Clinton accusers in a vain attempt to shift the focus off of himself.

Kathleen Wiley, Juanita Broaddrick, Paula Jones and Kathy Shelton joined Trump to discuss various accusations toward Bill and Hillary Clinton. Each of them made a brief statement, indicating that Trump would come out slinging mud Sunday night.

That's exactly what happened.

At the start of the debate, Trump tried to get ahead of questions about his 2005 sexual comments. Anderson Cooper wouldn't have it. With the second question of the night, Anderson Cooper asked Trump directly if he had ever sexually assaulted or groped women.

Trump denied the truth of what he claimed in the 2005 audio. Hillary seized on her opportunity. She talked about her past Republican opponents and colleagues. She said, "I never questioned their fitness to serve. Donald Trump is different." She proceeded to call out Trump, drawing out numerous examples of Trump's sexist language. Clinton said, "I think it's clear to anyone who heard [the video] it's clear exactly who he is."

A desperate Trump tried to come back from that and delivered a wide ranging response in which he barely bothered to defend himself. He looked like a fighter flailing on the ropes. The moderators had to cut off his rambling response that covered everything from ISIS to immigration, everything, that is, except what he was asked.

If you thought Trump would get to move off of that hot button issue, the first audience question was "Trump says the campaign has changed him. When did that happen?" Once again, Trump attempted to steer the conversation back to Bill Clinton. He brought up a slew of allegations against Bill, and the moment we were all waiting for came up.

Clinton was ready for that moment.

She had the Michelle Obama quote that had been everyone's lips all week ready to go. "When they go low, we go high." She went on to discuss Trump's bullying, but that was just icing on the cake. She had already landed the knockout blow.

The top of the debate went as poorly as it could possibly go, and there was nothing that Trump could do. From there Trump completely melted down, claiming he would appoint a special prosecutor to look into Clinton, and even said, looking directly at Hillary, "You belong in jail."

All of this happened before the candidates even got to discuss any positions they hold on campaign issues.
