What was supposed to be a celebratory moment for actress Mischa Barton quickly turned into a nightmare.

The O.C. alum revealed that she was drugged with GHB, a depressant that’s commonly used as a “date rape drug,” while celebrating her birthday and is using her frightening experience to educate other women.

“On the evening of the 25th, I went out with a group of friends to celebrate my birthday. While having drinks, I realized that something was not right as my behavior was becoming erratic and continued to intensify over the next several hours,” she explained in a statement to People.

“I voluntarily went to get professional help, and I was informed by their staff that I had been given GHB. After an overnight stay, I am home and doing well,” she continued.

Barton concluded, “I would like to extend a big thanks of gratitude to the professionals at Cedars-Sinai for their great care and professionalism. This is a lesson to all young women out there, be aware of your surroundings.”

Police officials were reportedly called to Barton’s home where they allegedly found her “fully clothed,” but “speaking in incoherent statements” before she was taken to the hospital.

From Issa Rae to Donald Trump to Kanye and Kim, 2016 was full of many highs and lows.
