There are far too many societal strains put on women to fit a very narrow, prescriptive type of beauty. Visual social apps like Instagram and Snapchat, loaded with filters and editing tools, also do their fair share of damage in putting additional pressure on young women to achieve “the look.” That’s why we’re so grateful for the women who aren’t afraid to share their insecurities, scars and imperfections with their followers. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, but the story behind it is what hits home.
