Meryl Streep Just Gave Us Something to Literally Shout About

No lie, this is big!

Meryl Streep just snagged the lead in season 2 of Big Little Lies and this is arguably 2018's best news so far.

*Spoilers ahead*

The Oscar Award winning actress will join the show's current stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman for a continuation of the book-turned-TV adaptation. Streep will play Mary Louise Wright, the mother of the abusive Perry Wright. According to the book, Mary is concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren and arrives to Monterey searching for answers about her son's death. Streep's addition to the show was made public by HBO today.

The return of Big Little Lies already was big news considering the fanfare around the widely-praised HBO drama that is executive produced by Witherspoon and Kidman. But thanks to the star power added to the cast, season two just became even more of a must-watch. The news sent Twitter into a frenzy, as it should (I'm actually shaking as I type).

It's also interesting that Meryl is dabbling in TV, since most of her work resides in film. Back in 2012 and 2010, the actress appeared in Web Therapy alongside Lisa Kudrow. In 2003, Streep played the role of Ethel Rosenberg in the HBO mini-series Angels in America. Big Little Lies, which premiered in February 2017 as a limited series, raked in five Golden Globe Awards, eight Emmy Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards. The show returns 2019, but we have a strong feeling it'll be worth the wait.

April Reign explains why even though the Academy Award nominees were more diverse in 2017, Hollywood still has work to do.
