If you assumed Michael Blanco, son of the notorious drug lord Griselda Blanco, had an unusual childhood, you’d be right. Growing up in a family that constantly had to watch their back for the law and for enemies wasn’t easy. Though they couldn’t move like an ordinary family, the Blancos still found a way to find normalcy to their lives.
Michael remembers enjoying movies, amusement parks and family time just like any other kid. Unlike other children, however, Griselda would rent out the entire movie theater just to ensure privacy and safety (plus, why not when you’re raking in millions per week?). Despite the obvious demands of her life, Griselda was a very involved mother. She once took Michael to Sea World three times in one weekend just to see that smile on his face. Family gatherings were no different. Michael remembers Griselda making his favorite Colombian soup and throwing huge parties in their mansion.
Though they weren’t a typical family, Michael, his mom and his brothers lived life to the fullest. “We make light of everything that’s dark,” he recalls. “My mom behind those doors was mommy. She was my love.”
Watch Michael talk about the softer side of his mother in the video above, and don’t miss the Cartel Crew premiere January 7 at 9/8c.
