Confession: We liked Mariah Carey’s “Triumphant” from her forthcoming project despite the disappointment loads of music critics felt. “Almost Home” from Oz The Great and Powerful soundtrack was gifted to the digital world a day early which promotes the upcoming film and Mariah’s album. While “Almost Home” shows off Mariah’s one of a kind powerhouse vocals the song itself is missing what tends to make a Mariah song stick.
Her signature riffs and runs carry the mostly forgettable track. Until the Stargate produced bass shifts (at 2:13) it sounds like something any pop artist could make. Finally she reaches the high octave, showing once again why she’s been Queen for nearly two decades. Despite the inspirational aspect it doesn’t hit you like the “Always Be My Baby” or “Honey” singles that topped charts and remain timeless today.
What say you? Does Mariah Carey’s “Almost Home” do it for you?
