Emeli Sande Wins Brit Award Over Posthumous Amy Winehouse

In today's microwave culture instant celebrities are made from a single catchy YouTube video. Whether the "artist" has actual talent matters little if they can churn out a Billboard top 10. So when someone like Emeli Sande, who writes her own music and has a voice comparable to the feeling of a cool breeze wins an award, music purists want to rejoice.

And to think Emeli's path was on it's way to sporting a white coat with a stethoscope wrapped around her neck daily, always being on-call. At last night's Brit Awards the British chanteuse was awarded for her artistry, a white polka dot statued reminder that music was her destiny. Nominated for four Brit awards the You Oughta Know artist took home two of the four for best British female and album for her debut Our Version of Events.

Our Version of Events was the most popular album in the UK in 2012 selling 1.4 million records, so the win isn't surprising. What is a bit alarming is that Emeli took the best British female win over the posthumous beloved Amy Winehouse. Winning over Amy as a fairly new artist who describes herself as an "unlikely pop star" speaks to the quality of her music. "For me, that so many people have connected with this album and found strength in these words makes me feel incredible and it doesn't make me feel as lonely," she said. The real reward is that Emeli's win is one of many examples that talent still matters and should be recognized.
