St. Lucia might not be a household name quite yet, but they're already one of our favorite bands here at VH1 headquarters. We first discovered them at SXSW in 2012, after which we featured their music in Hollywood Exes and their self-titled EP in VH1's Best Albums Of 2012. We got a few minutes to catch up with St. Lucia lead singer Jean-Philip Grobler down at SXSW last week, a few minutes before they played VH1's "Hello Austin!" party.
We've had the St. Lucia EP #ONREPEAT for the better part of the last year, so our primary line of questioning for them was around the release of their upcoming full-length on Columbia Records. "The album will probably come out in the fall, with a single coming out of the next couple of months or so," Grobler said. "It's been a long process of finalizing the mixes, and being on a big label, there's a lot of people in the chain of command who need to approve things."
Not wanting to sound like he's unappreciative of the support he's received, Grobler wisely continued. "In general, the label has been very kind of hands-off and just wanted to make everything the best it could possibly be, putting as much money as that takes [into it]."
As for the sound, fans can expect "a good balance between the two elements of the St. Lucia sound -- slightly more experimental songs with a kind of non-linear format and also some more kind of pop songs. I love both those sides of music, and they're both things I wanted to incorporate [on the album]."
Be sure to tune-in to VH1's Top 20 Video Countdown this weekend to watch Jim Shearer experience SXSW as only he can. His interviews with the likes of Snoop Lion, Paramore, Youngblood Hawke, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and more from down in Austin are guaranteed to make you giggle.
