Sara Bareilles Breaks Down The Blessed Unrest, Track By Track (Pt. 2 of 2)

Sara Bareilles’ latest LP, The Blessed Unrest, was released yesterday and immediately lept to the top of the iTunes charts, eclipsing even Jay-Z’s mammoth Magna Carta Holy Grail. We weren’t surprised by this success in the slightest, as VH1 has been #TeamSara since the way, way back. At this point, the You Oughta Know alum looks like she has a decent shot at topping next week’s charts, which would be richly deserved success for this LP, the most accomplished collection of songs that she’s released in her career to date.

We sat down with Sara here at VH1 headquarters late last week, and she was gracious enough to give us the backstory for all 12 of the tracks featured on The Blessed Unrest. We ran the Track-By-Track commentary for the first six songs yesterday, and today we’ve got Part 2 of 2 for you.

Our Fave Lyric: “Come on and see what a fire feels like, I bet it’s just like heaven.”

What Sara Has To Say: “I was thinking about Cassiopeia as a human, and the idea that popped into my head is that she falls in love with another star, and the only way you can get close enough to be together is to collide.”

8. “1000 TIMES”

Our Fave Lyric: “In another life my teeth and tongue / Speak aloud what until now I’ve only sung.”

What Sara Has To Say: “I’m my most courageous self, in terms of being honest and vulnerable, within my music.”

Our Fave Lyric: “There was a time when I would have believed them / If they told me it could not come true, that love’s just an illusion.”

What Sara Has To Say: “This song, for me, was about really claiming my belief that there is true love out there.”

10. “EDEN”

Our Fave Lyric: “Life in Eden had changed.”

What Sara Has To Say: “I found myself a little stuck in the disillusionment in Los Angeles, and this is about letting go of that and moving into a different space.”

Our Fave Lyric: “You must become an island / That’s what I am.”

What Sara Has To Say: “It’s not about shutting people out, it’s about figuring out who you are at your core.”

Our Fave Lyric: “The leaves are all still changing / The weather here is mild and vacant /
A winter’s blooming on Los Angeles”

What Sara Has To Say: “I like the optimism and the melancholy of the end of this song.”
