Twenty years ago today on August 6, R. Kelly gave the world a new subtle way to tell booty calls everywhere you want to do it with his release “Sex Me” (parts I and II, thank you) – the first single from his debut solo album 12 Play. Fact: no one has come close to recreating such a soulful, and provocative, ode to intimacy in the last two decades.
“Sex Me” peaked at #2 on the Billboard R&B charts, hit 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, and, as we all know, it was only the first of a sprawling list of R&B hits from not only 12 Play but the entire decades long discography of the self-proclaimed Pied Piper of R&B. No doubt Kell’s 1993 tune could easily compete with today’s panty-droppers with its new jack swing vibe, booty bumping bass, and church choir harmonies. Give it a tech update by sliding a “t” on the end for those millennials (“Sext meee, baby baby”) and voila! R. Kelly is clearly the future.
So grab your favorite negligée, girl, and tell your lover it “Seems Like You’re Ready” to get weird to this classic tonight…preferably in your Jeep. Oh, and after that? Time for the remix:
