YOK Artist Lorde Explains The “Arrogant” Origins Of Her Stage Name

She may have been born Ella Yelich-O’Connor, but the world is coming to know September’s You Oughta Know artist simply as “Lorde.” The “Royals” singer took her love of monarchy to the next level when she looked through books for aristocratic titles that she could call herself on stage and “lord” just jumped out at her. She said, “I love the sound of the word and how it looks, but I also like how it’s a little arrogant, you know what I mean?” Of course, not everything about the teen star is “arrogant”…

Lorde’s obsession with aristocracy carries over into her smash single, “Royals,” which was just covered in concert by Selena Gomez. While Gomez lives the life of a rich and famous teen pop queen, Lorde wanted the song and music video to reflect her humble roots and the humdrum lifestyles of average teens.

Lorde explained, “I guess I just wanted to portray the side of being a teenager which isn’t like super glamorous or whatever. Half the time it’s really boring and terrible. You don’t want to be there.”

Things aren’t always boring for the 16-year-old songstress. During a recent interview, she had a run-in with R. Kelly. Or at the very least, it was a “walk-by.”

“There was a glass wall behind me and the interviewer’s eyes were just going behind the wall, and she was like, ’R. Kelly is behind you.'” Lorde admitted it was “very exciting.”

Things are probably going to get more exciting for Lorde in the months to come. Her debut album, Pure Heroine, drops at the end of the month and “Royals” is still climbing up the charts.
