FREE FALLING! 10 Musicians Whose On-Stage Wipeouts Were Caught On Video

It’s all the rage these days to complain about concert attendees who kill the vibe by spending the entire show recording with their mobile phones or, worse, their iPads. While we don’t disagree entirely with the rage against those addicted to their screens, we would like to thank those brave souls who sacrifice the experience of living in the moment in order to capture these moments for posterity, especially when said moments result in once-in-a-lifetime fails. So, won’t you join us and salute these amateur videographers without whose dedication we would never have been able to see this grainy footage of superstar musicians like Beyoncé, Jennifer Lopez, Metallica’s Jason Newsted, Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler hilariously wiping out on stage for all our enjoyment? (Oh, PS: We turned all of these fails into GIFs for your enjoyment. You’re welcome!) JOE JONAS

Some people may believe in the power of a big grand finale, but we always like to show our best cards right out of the gate. While we were researching this post, we stumbled upon this clip of the Jonas Brothers performing at the 2007 American Music Awards and, well, we haven’t been able to stop laughing since. Perhaps rattled by the explosion of fake glass mere inches away from his face, or perhaps sensing a moment of viral infamy was in his grasp, the normally unflappable Joe Jonas bites it mere seconds into one of his band’s first big nationally televised performances. And you wondered why they didn’t last! CARRIE UNDERWOOD

Ok, this one we feel a little bit bad about for a few reasons. First, this clip of the former American Idol taking a spill during a show on Thursday night is what sent us down this rabbit hole in the first place. Second, Carrie ended up with a cast on her foot after this incident. Thankfully, she ended up taking the spill in stride, sending out humorous tweets like “Good news, it’s not broken” and “Hey, remember that time in Corpus Christi when that girl busted her butt on stage?! Hilarious! Oh wait, that was me! #5inchheels #klutz” just moments after the show ended. JENNIFER LOPEZ

Jennifer Lopez performed her since-forgotten single “Louboutins” at the 2009 American Music Awards. The song may have faded out of the collective conscious, but the memory of J. Lo’s famous tail-o bouncing off the stage after an ill-advised high jump is still at the top of our mind. When her famous caboose hit the stage, aftershocks were reported as far away as Albequerque. JASON NEWSTED (of METALLICA)

We took great pains to make sure this list of superstar spills wasn’t populated entirely by female pop stars wearing high heels. Case in point, this old footage of Metallica’s former bassist Jason Newsted. It’s unclear what year this was from, but what is clear is that you have to be careful not to move too quickly after headbanging on stage. Proving he’s a boss, though, Newsted keeps on playing despite the embarrassment. RIHANNA

We didn’t take Spanish in high school or college, sadly; our cheese-eatin’ guidance counselor encouraged us to take a French, which has come in handy exactly zero times in the years since graduation. However, we DO know enough Spanish to know that “Te Amo,” the song that Rihanna is singing below, means “My love.” Unfortch, we have no idea how to translate “Watch out for that last step, IT’S A DOOZY!” If we did, maybe we could’ve warned RiRi before she took the plunge here. There’s no denying that Rihanna can definitely Talk That Talk, but she’s still got some work to do when it comes to walking that walk. MICHELLE WILLIAMS (of DESTINY’S CHILD)

Poor Michelle Williams. Of the three members who make up Destiny’s Child, you’re most likely to see her mug beset with #struggleface. Here, a simple walk on-stage to play the threesome’s song “Soldier” results in another in a long line of embarrassing moments for MiWi. Thankfully, she’s got a little bootylicious padding to keep her from getting too hurt. STEVEN TYLER (of AEROSMITH)

We know that Steven Tyler likes to live it up while he’s going down, but we’re pretty sure this on-stage wipeout wasn’t what he was singing about in “Love In An Elevator.” Talk about Living On The Edge! CARLOS SANTANA

“I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” Yeah yeah, we know it’s not exactly kosher to make fun of senior citizens, let alone a LEGENDARY senior citizen like Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee Carlos Santana, but in this instance, we just can’t help it. We mean, look at the guy. He’s got two feet planted on the ground, he’s churning out a face-melting solo, and out of the blue, he starts stumbling backwards until he ends up headfirst in a drum riser. Maybe that’s cosmic karma for recording with Rob Thomas, who knows? METHOD MAN

Ah, you thought we were going to leave hip hop out of this, didn’t you? WRONG! We are equal opportunity offenders when it comes to musicians falling on stage. You’ve seen teenybopper pop stars, sultry R&B singers, metalheads and now a rap legend hitting the deck. We can only venture to guess that when Method Man was singing “How High?” at this concert, he answered his own question when he took a Three Stooges style fall into the mosh pit. BEYONCÉ

Hail to the King! Yes, Bey is pretty much perfect in everything that she does, which is why these moments when she proves that she’s not a robot after all are so refreshing. If you like it, put a safety mat underneath it! And now, a mega GIF Wall of all the wipeouts!
