True Life: I’m Miley Cyrus’ Tongue

Being a part of Miley Cyrus’ world sounds like a dream come true for most. But it’s not always cracked up to be when you become the center of attention just for being the singer’s most famous muscle: her tongue. VH1.com has the exclusive account of Miley’s tongue’s journey from obscurity to fame and the controversy that comes with it. It’s been one crazy summer for her tongue.

May 06: The Punk incident.

Months after the singer debuted her new look (the short platinum blonde hair and affinity for white clothing), it was discussed among Miley’s inner-camp to put her tongue front and center at the 2013 Costume Institute Gala. The theme was Punk: Chaos To Couture,” which seemed like the perfect setting for Miley’s tongue. However, moments before hitting the red carpet, Miley’s tongue was asked to let the singer’s hair and dress be the main focus. The tongue was left with a brief, mostly-overlooked appearance on the red carpet.

June 19: Miley’s tongue’s coming out party.

One month later, Miley made good on her promise to get her tongue the attention it deserved by showcasing it in her new video for “We Can’t Stop.” While Miley’s tongue got plenty of attention, it was the video’s insanity as well as the twerking that ultimately stole the show. Upset, her tongue had to figure out its next move.

July 15: The media blitz.

It was quickly decided that the tongue would lead the summer’s album promotion, making appearances at any and all publicity events. Good Morning America proved a good opportunity for Miley’s tongue to get more attention on national television. From then on, Miley’s tongue made sure it was seen on every red carpet, whether it was the Teen Choice Awards or the MTV VMAs or on television, such as Saturday Night Live and the Today show.

Coming Up: Miley’s tongue on social media and the MTV VMAs.

July 18: London calling.

But the tongue didn’t realize the power of social media. Thanks to Twitter and Instagram, it had more fans than it realized. Soon, it became clear that fans were only interested in snapping photos with the singer’s oral muscle, like what happened when she popped over to London.

August 08: Liam’s Paranoia.

One person who was not a fan of Miley’s tongue was Liam Hemsworth. The singer’s now ex-fiance made it clear that her tongue was to be seen nowhere near him at the premiere of his summer flop.

August 25: Dancing with Miley.

With the success of “We Can’t Stop,” and the non-stop hype surrounding her performance at the MTV VMAs, Miley’s camp knew it had to bring it. There were talks of twerking, dancing bears, little people and, of course, Miley’s tongue. It all came together in the most buzzed about performance of the night. Not even N SYNC’s 110-second reunion had anything on tongue and crew.

Coming Up: The sledgehammer, Uncle Terry and the backlash.

September 09: The sledgehammer.

Knowing how successful the VMA performance was, Miley’s tonuge jumped at the opportunity to film “Wrecking Ball.” While some thought it went to far in the video directed by Terry Richardson, Miley’s tongue relished every moment it had with that sledgehammer (and wrecking ball chain).

September 21: #Nipplegate.

Jealous of the attention Miley’s tongue was getting, Cyrus herself stepped up her game. At the IHeartRadio Music Festival, the singer’s nipples had their moment of controversy. Covered with pasties and a white mesh top, the singer’s chest stole all the attention away from her tongue. And so began the backlash for the singer and her tongue. Her camp was pushing it to the side as it dealt with the media’s concern that the singer was going too far.

September 24: Rolling Stone.

But then days later, Miley’s tongue was back in the spotlight — on the cover of Rolling Stone. Her tongue’s profile reached new heights, prompting the singer to throw shade. “Now people expect me to come out and twerk with my tongue out all the time,” Cyrus lamented in interview.

October 05 – 07: SNL and the Today show.

As Miley implied in her RS interview, her tongue would be taking a back seat. While it did make appearances on Saturday Night Live and Today, it was second fiddle to the singer’s other agenda: showcasing her music ahead of her album release.

October 08: The backlash.

Like anyone who has made it to the top, there’s always fear of the fall. What was building underneath the surface for months, finally started showing itself. Miley’s tongue was not welcome. It was suddenly a joke on the Internet. Blamed (by Miley) for distasteful attitudes and appearances. Thought to be the reason behind the singer’s health problems. The center of a controversial photo shoot with Terry Richardson.

With all the controversy surrounding Miley’s tongue, it’s hard to guess what exactly comes next. One thing is clear, if it can’t stop, it definitely needs to slow down. Only time will tell what it’s truly like living life as Miley’s tongue. But it’s been one wild ride.
