Never-Heard John Lennon Tapes Now Available On Innovative New App

John Lennon was always a man who broke new ground, so we like to think he'd be a fan of John Lennon: The Bermuda Tapes, a cutting-edge interactive iPhone app that blends music, game play, documentary film, and charity work in a way that has never been done before! Released today, the app allows us to hear rare Lennon acoustic demos for the very first time, and lets us learn about the near-death experience that inspired his final album, Double Fantasy.

In honor of the record's 33rd anniversary, the program allows you to navigate through the dramatic story of John's harrowing sea journey to the island of Bermuda in June of 1980, during his self-imposed "exile" from the music industry. The scenic trip started peacefully enough aboard the sailboat Megan Jaye, but a brutal squall caused the three-person crew to become incapacitated with seasickness -leaving Lennon alone to sail the small craft through the choppy sea! The dangerous experience rejuvenated John's adventurous spirit, igniting a creative rebirth that led to a huge influx of new songs that became Double Fantasy.

And now for the music! The Bermuda Tapes app features unheard demos of beloved Lennon classics like "Woman," "(Just Like) Starting Over," "I'm Losing You,"  "Nobody Told Me," "Dear Yoko" and more. In addition, several versions of the tunes have been edited together, providing a rare glimpse into the legend's creative process. Original handwritten song-lyrics sheets and newly discovered photographs are included among the many archival goodies.

But the best part about of the app? It's all for a good cause! Proceeds from downloads will support WhyHunger and its "Imagine There’s No Hunger" campaign, which helps combat global childhood hunger and poverty through sustainable agriculture. Lennon's widow Yoko Ono is one of the partners behind the unprecedented multimedia project.  "I think the album app captures the sense of discovery and the artistic dialogue that John and I shared at that time and provides a new way to help us imagine a world without hunger," she says.
