Tonight VH1 Classic will air Black Oak Arkansas: 40 Years of Heaven, Hell N’ High Water, a documentary about the wild antics and unlikely return of the high-energy boogie rockers. Led by long-haired and bare-chested frontman Jim "Dandy" Mangrum, the group were among the top concert draws of the mid-1970s before label and management troubles derailed them.

The band was part of the Southern rock explosion, kicked off by The Allman Brothers Band, taken to full fruition by Lynyrd Skynyrd and carried on to this present day in the music of The Black Crowes and the Tedeschi Trucks Band. It takes a hard-man to sing a sweet song and though the music had a melodic edge, influenced by the region’s soul and country music roots, these hirsute he-man were often just as handy with their fists as with their instruments. These were tough working class rockers and had the physiques to prove it so take a look at 10 of Southern rock’s most foremost dudes.
