Pronunciation Guide: HAIM, Kodaline and Lorde Teach You How To Say Their Names

HAIM, Kodaline and Lorde are just three artists to emerge this year who have challenged our ability to talk out loud. On paper, each of the artist’s on-stage monikers look simple enough, but all of them are trickier than expected. No matter how hard we try, we always say “HAIM” wrong! Thankfully, these emerging artists sat down with VH1 to teach us how to say their names.

HAIM: [hahy-uhm]

“Two syllables,” Este Arielle informs fans. But even these sisters have trouble saying their own name. (If they can’t even get it right, then we certainly don’t expect you to.)

KODALINE: [koh-da-lahyn]

This Irish band made a splash stateside with their cover of Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ hit, “Same Love.” The group sat down with VH1 to tell us all the weird ways people have said their group’s name.

LORDE: [lawrd]

“I love the sound of the word and how it works,” Ella Maria Lani Yelich-O’Connor says of her stage name, which sounds just like ’lord.’

(Both HAIM and Lorde can be seen performing at VH1’s You Oughta Know In Concert special. ICYMI: Check out a preview of their cover of Sheryl Crow’s “Strong Enough” and watch the full concert on VH1 on Thursday, Nov. 21 at 8 pm EST.)
