With the release of Shakira and Rihanna’s new duet, “Can’t Remember To Forget You,” we are reminded of all the female pairings to come before them. In fact, this is Shakira’s second time collaboration with a fierce R&B lady. Meanwhile, a number of pop’s biggest stars made duets a regular thing in the ’90s. Whitney Houston and Barbra Streisand led the charge and recently Beyonce and Lady Gaga have picked up the slack. But what’s the best duet of them all? Check it out and sound off in our poll.
10) Eve & Gwen Stefani, “Let Me Blow Ya Mind”
Not a duet in the truest form, this rap/sung collaboration was a massive hit and featured two strong women coming together. Gwen provided the hooks and Eve offered up the bite.
9) Barbra Streisand & Celine Dion, “Tell Him”
What happens when you get Babs and Celine on one record? If you’re Sony, you don’t release it in the U.S. citing lack of radio support. Then the song becomes a huge hit anyway and earns a Grammy nomination. Don’t doubt the power of these two women, even if the song is 5-minute sap fest.
8) Beyonce & Shakira, “Beautiful Liar”
Even though Shakira has a new duet with Rihanna, the song doesn’t come close to her other collabo featuring Beyonce. The two singers get their hip shaking on in this slinky Latin-infused R&B jam.
7) Deborah Cox & Whitney Houston, “Same Script, Different Cast”
Instead of fighting over the same man, Whitney plays the seer to Deborah’s new relationship. It’s a warning cry. But like all young women in love, Deborah doesn’t want to hear it. We’ve all been there, that’s why this song works so well.
6) Beyonce & Lady Gaga, “Telephone”
The second Bey track and first of Gaga’s two duets on this list ups the fierce factor. These women are at their best in the video but have clearly have fun with hanging on the line. If only it had more Bey on the track!
5) Christina Aguilera & Lady Gaga, “Do What U Want”
Not even a month old and this song has quickly become the one to beat. These two queens enjoy the sexual play and innuendo on this song that crosses so many lines that it’s hard to know where things start and stop blurring. More of this please!
4) Mariah Carey & Whitney Houston, “When You Believe”
It took several years of pining before fans got the duet they always wanted: Mariah and Whitney. The two teamed up for the theme song to the animated film, The Prince of Egypt. Both women were still at the top of their game and executed this Babyface-penned ballad flawlessly.
3) Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer, “No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)”
Leave it to Donna Summer to inject Babs with a does of disco to bring out the best in her. These two aren’t crying for anyone anymore! If only we all had the same conviction these two had on this record.
2) Barbara Dickson & Elaine Paige, “I Know Him So Well”
Recorded for a concept album, the song brought together Barbara and Elaine as Svetlana and Florence respectively. The two singers played two women on opposite sides of the same man. The mistress versus the estranged wife. Both bitter. Both lost. So ’80s.
1) Brandy & Monica, “The Boy Is Mine”
It doesn’t really get better than this cat fight between Brandy and Monica. Both women brought their A-game to this song, which featured fierce vocals, catchy hooks, and endless fantasies about the two of these fighting over you. It was fantastic to see two women got at like this on record and laugh all the way to the bank.
