When a man loves a woman, you have a classic love song. When a woman publicly kisses another woman, you get usually a sexy show and a pop culture scandal. Sure, girl-on-girl pop star kisses may be hot, but are they actually just shallow ploys for publicity? Or can there be a bigger purpose to such a scintillating show?
There are usually two reasons why a female pop star might want to kiss another woman in public: Either she is in love with that woman or she wants to spark controversy and generate publicity. It seems that more often than not, those famous girl-on-girl kisses aren't a declaration of true love, but rather a ploy for press.
When Miley Cyrus kissed Katy Perry during her Bangerz show in Los Angeles last month, she did it knowing full well that she would be making headlines. After all, it had worked in the past for pop stars like Avril Lavigne, Britney Spears, Rihanna, Madonna, and Christina Aguilera.
Lest you think we're being completely cynical, there is a silver lining to having pop stars kissing other girls. When Lady Gaga planted a kiss on another girl on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet, she did so out of love and to protest homophobic policies in the U.S. military. A kiss may be just a kiss, but everyone deserves to love whomever they want.
However, what do YOU think?
