Supergroup: n. The meeting of individual musical minds from separate iconic bands who attempt to combine their unique powers in order to create something totally new (Ok, not an official definition by any means, but that about sums it up). And though they don’t always work out as planned, and often times aren’t as great as their respective pioneering bands, these projects do tend to bring forth some interesting music that does indeed sound like a merger of legendary talents. Case in point, the following 20 bands. They’ve all had an impact on the hard rock and heavy metal scene, whether it be through commercial and/or critical success, a lasting legacy, or just pure “holy-crap-this-is-amazing” reactions from fans when the bands are formed.
From The Damned Things to Black Country Communion, A Perfect Circle to Velvet Revolver, there have definitely been some supergroups with lasting impact on the music industry. So to celebrate this week’s That Metal Show guests, The Winery Dogs and Vinnie Paul of Hellyeah, here’s the 20 Greatest Hard Rock & Heavy Metal Supergroups. Oh, and here’s your chance to mull over your own fantasy band lineup. Dammit…we can dream, can’t we?
