Kiss fans were delighted this past December when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame finally welcomed the pioneering hard rock and heavy metal band into its hallowed ranks, a full 15 years after they were first eligable for inclusion. But within weeks of the announcement their joy turned to sorrow as the various fractured ranks of the band began bickering about who would be recognized and who would play at tomorrow night’s induction ceremonies at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. On one side are the band, led by founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, who insisted all members past and present be involved in the induction, including current drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer. On the other are founding Kiss drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley, who felt as founding members they take preeminence, and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame itself, who said only the original lineup of the band is being recognized.
Recriminations flew back and forth until late February when both Ace Frehley and the band itself made statements confirming that the original lineup would not be performing together at Thursday’s awards show. The who and why has gotten rather convoluted over the past months so to help fans make sense of it all we’ve put together a complete guide to the entire Kiss Rock and Roll Hall of Fame controversy, or Kontroversy. Find out the various positions of all parties, where the roots of the bands troubles lie, and how what should have been a crowning achievement for the group has broken down into another squabble over their legacy.Hear founding Kiss drummer talk about why he’s “heartbroken” over the band not appearing at the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall ofFame induction ceremony and watch his full appearance on VH1 Classic’s That Metal Show HERE.
