CHVRCHES' Lauren Mayberry On Why It's Good That Feminism Is "The New Black"

April's You Oughta Know artist CHVRCHES is made up of Iain Cook, Martin Doherty and Lauren Mayberry: three musicians who all see themselves as equal parts of an awesome whole. However, the public seems to focus on the fact that Mayberry is the lone female. Mayberry, a former music journalist, spoke out against misogyny in the music business in an op ed that went viral, and she spoke to us about the role feminism has in the modern pop scene.

In the past year, Lorde and Selena Gomez have had a tiff over who was more feminist and artists like Katy Perry were lambasted for not declaring themselves feminists. So why all the sudden interest in feminism now?

Mayberry wisely said that "feminism was 'the new black’ in terms of political things to be discussed in music." That might make the social justice issue sound like a seasonal trend, but Mayberry thinks it's all good. "From my point of view that’s good because it’s promoting discussion about something like that."

And how does Mayberry define feminism? "I think I subscribe to a fairly basic dictionary definition of feminism: it’s somebody who seeks equality between the sexes." Mayberry also noted that when people skew the definition it creates stereotypes that make people feel uncomfortable with the term. "I think anybody that’s working hard to progress those kind of political causes can be on the team."
