The rising British soul singer and VH1 You Oughta Know artist for the month of June is proud of his homosexuality, and we're proud of him! Already this year, Sam Smith has seen major success in the US pop charts, following his triumph across the pond in the U.K. In addition to his incredible year, Sam will be joining the ranks gay, lesbian, and bisexual musicians who serve as beacons for the LGBT community.
In an interview with Fader magazine, Sam was discussing one of his most recent music videos, "Leave Your Lover". If you were watching and trying to figure out who Sam was after in that love triangle, it was the guy! His inspiration for the song and video came from a guy he was in love with last year that didn't love him back. Poor, Sam. We love you!
When it comes to his music though, Sam says he wants it to be universal. "I've made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody — whether it's a guy, a female or a goat — and everybody can relate to that," he says.
